Obermeyer was founded by Klaus Obermeyer, who fled post-war Germany and came to Aspen, Colorado (The "Alps of America"). With a background in engineering, and a love of ski culture, he combined the two and created ski apparel with technological innovations to make the skiing experience even better. This brand grew to international appeal and continues to be one of the top brands in the ski world.
As with most of the brands we carry, Obermeyer is committed to environmentally conscientious practices. The Aspen, Colorado based company uses post-consumer recycled polyester (PET) in high performance gear, and the architectural design of their headquarters minimizes energy consumption. In fact, their employees are rewarded for using alternative transportation. The company got its start when Klaus Obermeyer moved to Aspen from Germany in 1947. Klaus was an active ski mountaineer, racer, jumper and rock climber. He knew that people would spend more time on the slopes if they could stay warm and dry longer, so he handmade a down ski parka using his goose down comforter.
In 1961, the first Sport Obermeyer factory warehouse opened in Aspen, and the innovations continued with “soft-shell” jackets, double lens goggles, and the first waterproof-breathable fabrics.
